Did you know that about 60% of pregnant women stop exercising completely during their pregnancy? I’ll be honest – I was almost one of them! When I got pregnant with my first kiddo back in 2019, I thought I’d have to kiss my morning jogs and yoga sessions goodbye for nine months. Boy, was I wrong.
Staying active during pregnancy isn’t just okay – it’s actually super beneficial for both you and your baby. After stumbling through my own pregnancy fitness journey (with plenty of mistakes along the way), I learned that the right kind of exercise can make everything from labor to recovery so much easier.
Why Pregnancy Fitness Actually Matters
Here’s the thing – I used to think prenatal exercise was just about “bouncing back” after birth. That’s not it at all! During my second trimester, my doctor explained how staying active could help prevent gestational diabetes, reduce back pain, and even improve my mood during those hormonal roller coasters.
The benefits are legit backed by science too. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, regular prenatal workouts can help you sleep better, maintain a healthy pregnancy weight, and prepare your body for the physical demands of childbirth.
Safe Exercises for Expecting Moms
Okay, so what actually counts as safe pregnancy exercise? I made the mistake of trying to continue my high-intensity interval training during my first trimester, and let me tell you – that was a hard no from my body.
Swimming became my absolute favorite. There’s something magical about feeling weightless when you’re carrying extra pounds! Plus, it’s low-impact and works your whole body without putting stress on your joints. I’d hit the pool three times a week and honestly felt like a graceful dolphin instead of a tired pregnant lady.
Walking was another game-changer. Nothing fancy – just 30 minutes around the neighborhood most days. Some days I’d only make it 15 minutes before needing a bathroom break (pregnancy bladder is real, y’all), but that was totally fine.
My Go-To Pregnancy Workout Routine
- Prenatal yoga three times weekly for flexibility and stress relief
- Swimming or water aerobics twice a week
- Daily walks lasting 20-30 minutes
- Modified strength training with lighter weights
- Pelvic floor exercises (Kegels) every single day
What to Avoid During Pregnancy Workouts
This is where I learned some hard lessons. After my belly started growing, I kept doing regular crunches because nobody told me they could cause something called diastasis recti – where your ab muscles separate. Not fun.
Contact sports are definitely out. So are exercises where you might fall or get hit in the belly. I had to give up my recreational soccer league, which honestly bummed me out, but safety first! Hot yoga was another no-go – overheating during pregnancy can be risky for baby’s development, according to Mayo Clinic guidelines.

Also, lying flat on your back after the first trimester gets uncomfortable and can restrict blood flow. I switched to side-lying or inclined positions for any floor exercises, which felt way better anyway.
Listening to Your Pregnant Body
This was the hardest part for me, honestly. Before pregnancy, I’d push through discomfort because “no pain, no gain,” right? Wrong! During pregnancy, pain is your body’s way of saying “hold up, something’s not right here.”
I learned to use the “talk test” – if I couldn’t hold a conversation while exercising, I was pushing too hard. My heart rate would get monitored too, keeping it under 140 beats per minute like my doctor recommended (though newer guidelines are more flexible about this).
Staying hydrated became crucial. I’m talking water bottle permanently attached to my hand. Dehydration during pregnancy can trigger contractions, which scared me enough to drink constantly throughout my workouts.
Modifying Exercise Through Each Trimester
First trimester was actually easier than I expected, exercise-wise. The fatigue was brutal, but I could still do most of my regular activities with minor adjustments. Second trimester was my golden period – energy came back and I felt strong!
Third trimester though? That’s when things got real interesting. My balance was totally off because of my shifted center of gravity, so I ditched anything that required coordination. Prenatal yoga and swimming became my main jam, with lots of rest days thrown in when my body asked for them.
Your Fitness Journey Starts Here
Look, every pregnancy is different, and what worked for me might need tweaking for you. Always check with your healthcare provider before starting any exercise program during pregnancy – seriously, don’t skip this step! Some conditions make certain exercises risky, and only your doctor knows your specific situation.
The most important thing I learned was being flexible (pun intended) with my expectations. Some days I crushed my workout goals, other days getting off the couch felt like an Olympic achievement. Both were okay! Your body is literally growing a human – give yourself grace.
